Landing page or website? A short decision guide

They are not two sizes of the same thing. They answer different questions, and picking the wrong one is the most common way to waste a first budget.

On this page

The question usually arrives phrased as a budget problem — "can we start with just a landing page?" — when it is really a strategy question with a clear answer either way.

They answer different questions

A landing page answers will you do this one thing? It has one audience, one message and one action, and everything that does not serve that action is removed on purpose.

A website answers who are you and can I trust you? It has several audiences arriving with different questions, and its job is to let each of them find their own answer without being funnelled.

A landing page with a navigation menu is a worse landing page. A website with one page is a worse website. The shapes are not interchangeable.

When a landing page is enough

  • You are running paid traffic to a specific offer.
  • You are validating an idea and want a real signal before building more.
  • You are launching one product, one event or one campaign with a deadline.

In these cases a site would dilute the result. Every extra link is a way out of the decision you are asking someone to make.

When you need the site

  • People search for your company by name and need to find something credible.
  • You sell more than one thing, or to more than one kind of buyer.
  • You want search traffic, which needs pages that answer questions, not one page that makes an offer.
  • You are being evaluated — by a client, a partner or a hire — and the site is doing the reassuring.

The honest middle

Most businesses eventually need both, and the order matters less than the sequencing. If you have a campaign in the next month, build the landing page and let it earn the budget for the site. If you are being looked up rather than advertised, build the site first — a campaign pointed at nothing has nowhere to send anyone.
